BB79: Rewarding the Vets?

Blog Banter is a series of curated prompts for EvE Online bloggers. The topic for 2016-11-30 is Talvorian Dex's BB79, Rewarding the Vets?:

Should CCP put more effort into rewards for loyal customers? The mystery code from the collector's edition hasn't seen much use and whilst veteran rewards have been mentioned by CCP several times at Fanfests, we have seen nothing. Wasn't there talk of a special station only 10-year vets could dock in at one point?

Is this lack of gratitude towards loyal customers alienating? Do people wish for a change here? Is it too self-righteous to expect small signs of gratitude for being a loyal customer? Is a customer purchasing half a year in advance more loyal than someone plexing every now and than probably missing out a few weeks or months a year? How do CCP place rewards in game without hurting the economy?

Or is it just a case of there is no need and HTFU snowflake?

There are some responses up already, and they make good reading. Wilhelm Arcturus pre-empted a lot of what I had to say.

I would describe the general tenure responses as "nope, the veterans are already doing fine." I agree.

Having said that, I guess I feel like there's a possibility here: not so much to outright "reward" veterans, but to give them additional opportunities. Crazy proposal: Every so often give players the chance to trade huge ISK and many skill points for something really special.

Think about it. We now have a major, controllable ISK sink, an equalizing SP sink, and yet veterans who have more of both things than they know what to do with might jump on the chance to trade them for something actually tangible and useful. Permanent unlosable implant sets, for example. A bunch of copies of some crazy-good hull. Fatigue-less jump drive like in the old days. How much might pilots pay? My guess is that it would be substantial.

A lot of games have the concept of "ascension" and rebirth, something the old MUDs did well. The Kingdom of Loathing is a "modern" example. Maybe we need to let vets with enough ISK and SP ascend? Start over with 10M ISK, 10M SP, 1.3x skilling rate, special overtanked pods, something like that? Would be a reward to players with all the things who want to refresh their game. The unascended could stay comfortable as they are now.

It seems to me that the big problem for the vets is that they aren't individually visible as anything special. I can't tell who's flying that ship, unless it's a Titan: for all that they are common these days Titans are the product and tool of large alliances, not individual veteran capsuleers.

There's a famous story of the origin of the "black belt" in martial arts. According to custom, a practitioner washes the Gi (robe), but never the belt. So if you see somebody coming whose belt is so dirty as to look black...well, you might want to treat that person with respect.

Wouldn't it be cool if we had visibly badass veterans? Wouldn't the new players and the veterans alike relish this?

Seems like it to me.
